Major Diamond Shapes
Round form become the standard in cutting industry because of this 90% of brilliants have this shape of cutting. The round cutting differs from other forms by standard ornaments and proportions, the higher cost. From another side the famous cutter of diamonds Gabi Tolkowski from Antwerp who cut many diamonds for his life considers that it's right to name the round shape fansy one. Because in nature diamonds can be in different forms but those section of diamond crystals that determine the shape of the future brilliant. They can be square, right-angled, with bevel angles, triangular but never round. It's well known that while cutting the round diamond about a half of mass grinds off irretrievably.
Attractiveness of the diamond mainly depends on the attractiveness of the shape. Sometimes the name of this or that cutting can be attractive, for example, “princess”. The standard round cutting is more thought over in optical features: shining, scintillation, play. Because of this the price of the round shape is higher.
Round Shape (Brilliant)
Round brilliants are the most popular because of their strong “play” and more refer of white light to spectator. During creating of round cutting the size of the diamond lose significantly. These are the main reasons of the high price of round diamonds.
Round cutting makes standards for other forms and takes 75% of all sold diamonds today. This 57-(58)-facets shape consists of the crown (top), girdle (the widest part) and pavilion (base). It's necessary to stand exactly some proportions in order to reach the maximal shining in the round diamond.
Marquise is the wedge cut ting in the form of the boat. Women often chose marquises, they show their freedom by such a way. This prolonged form creates the effect of long and narrow fingers.
This cutting appeared in the times of Sun King, Louis XIV. The king wanted to merry Marquise de Pompadour and commanded to create the diamond like the smile of Marquise. This cutting is most effective in solitaries and in surround of small brilliants.
Pear is the wedge cutting in the form of droplet. These attractive diamonds are often used in pendants and in some other adornments. Many of the largest diamonds ever discovered were cut in the form of a pear. Both large and small diamonds are kept in the form of pear. Single large diamond in the form of pear fixed in the adornment visually longs fingers.
Oval is wedged cutting with the outline of the oval. Mostly this form is used for cutting of large diamonds for fixing in the rings, ear-rings and pendants. The large single diamond in the shape of oval fixed in the adornment visually long fingers.
Princess is the wedge square or right-angled cutting with acute angles. This cutting possesses very good “play” and high rate of brilliancy. It is relatively new cutting with a great amount of shining facets. It is often used as single insets in different adornments. Often the princess in some adornments is accompanied with trilliants in both sides. It's necessary to significantly increase the depth of pavilion to 70-78% in order to increase the play of the gem.
Most of square and right-angled cutting can't be compared in their shining with round diamonds. Princess was specially worked out in such a way in order to reach this parameter.
Buy an adornment with the diamond cut as princess it's necessary to determine that fixing protect all four angles of the gemstone because of they greatly exposed to splits.
Emerald is stepped right-angled cutting with truncated angles and 8-angled outline. The diamond cut as emerald can be magnificent. This cutting has less play but has wider and brighter flashes of light. This form is very refined and elegant. It is often used for setting in the some adornments.
Because of the “open” of this cutting cracks, low color and low quality of cutting become noticeable even to common eye. So while buying the diamond in the form of emerald it's very important to pay attention on the quality of the gemstone. Emerald is not a traditional cutting for diamond as the round one and not so popular as “princess”. All these make the price on the emeralds not very high.
Last years brilliants with square emerald cutting become more popular.
Asher is the variant of emerald cutting which has the form of square and more tiers. Asher allows his owner to look like elegant and majestic. The style of this cutting Art-deco combines the old charm with modern cutting technologies for creation of blinding brilliancy.
Ashers with equal length and width are considered to be preferable. This ratio shouldn't be more then 1.1:1.
This is the wedge cutting of square or right-angled form with 8-angled outline. Radiant combines the elegance of emerald with brilliancy and the play of the round diamond. In order to reach the more play of the gemstone it's necessary to increase the depth of the pavilion during cutting. As a result this causes the increasing of diamond's weight. Radiant cutting is often used for cutting of single large diamonds. The form of the radiant can improve their color.
Heart is the wedge form of cutting has the outline in the form of the heart – the main symbol of love. This is the diamond in the form of pear split in the head. Buying such diamond it's necessary to pay attention on the flatness and accuracy of outline because of the beauty of this cutting directly depends from qualification of the cutter.
Hearts usually has equal length and width.
Triangle (Trillions) Shape
This is the cutting of triangle form. Trillions are often called triangles and trilliants. These are the same forms of cutting which are principally differ from other forms by their triangle form. The number and the form of facets can vary.
Trillion is effective wedge cutting. This type of cutting was worked out in Amsterdam. Design of cutting can vary according to natural features of diamonds and to personal preference of cutter. This can be both traditional triangle form with acute angles and more rounded. Trillions are often used as sides insets in the rings with large gemstones. The length and width should be similar in trilliants.
It is the stepped cutting which has right-angled outline. The ratio of length and width in the baguettes can be 1:1, in this case the form of cutting is called “square”. Except right-angled baguettes there are trapezium ones. This form of cutting is used for cutting of small brilliants. Such diamonds can be lateral, surround larger gem or put in one line, for example, in bracelet.
